ailsa craig pop-up exhibition
2024
The end of February 2024 saw the completion of the Ailsa Craig Popup Exhibition project, funded by ARIA. Comprising a series of interpretation boards covering topics such as geology, wildlife and a history of the island, all supported by digital panels displaying videos of the scenery of Ailsa Craig and a video made of local people discussing the importance of the island. The
information shown on the interpretation panels was written by a very knowledgeable local expert who had spent years researching the formation and geology of Ailsa Craig, and all the images
came from an ex-harbour master of Girvan whose images and videos show the island and its wildlife off to perfection.
This exhibition ran at the Girvan Library, the McKechnie Institute and even made a visit to the Girvan Tattie Fest in June. A large part of it spent the summer on show at the Tourist Information Point. It is an exhibition that will be added to and shown repeatedly in future years. At the library the exhibition was seen by the many local people attending the library, going to the clubs held there and by the volunteers involved in the Girvan Bunting Project - attracting maximum viewing. At the McKechnie, its display coincided with an exhibition of the winners of a Carrick photographic competition (Go Girvan had funded the mounting of the winning prints) - again for maximum viewing figures. The display at the Tourist Information Point was at the height of the summer when the town had visitors from all over the world (including a couple of cruise ships). It is estimated that about 5,000 people benefitted from seeing the exhibition and learning about Ailsa Craig.
