The Petanque Court

At The McKechnie Garden

In 1989 when the people of Girvan decided to twin with Torcy in France, the committee knew they would need somewhere to meet with the participating French Group when they arrived in Girvan.  As Girvan has no Town Hall, the ideal place was the McKechnie.  It was there, that for many years the Girvan families involved in the Twinning, waited for their French guests.  The McKechnie was also used, when necessary, as a place to provide lunch, to host evenings with the French walking group and where the then Provost Helen Moonie provided afternoon tea to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Twinning.  It was thought to be the best place to display the gifts given to the people of Girvan by the Mayor of Torcy.

The Town Twinning Committee used the McKechnie to hold their meetings and cheese and wine evenings.  In 2002 the Town Twinning Committee approached the Friends of the McKechnie to ask if they could change the grass area to a Petanque Pitch, as the Council had said they were not responsible for the upkeep of the garden, this seemed the sensible solution.  A pitched was installed and is still used by the Twinners.  Some members of the Twinning Committee also see to the upkeep of the garden and a remuneration is given to the Town Twinning Association by the Friends of the McKechnie.
